With personal pride and, most importantly, the WBO interim lightweight title up for grabs, Mitchell and Katsidis were in menacing mood when they squared up.
As expected, Dagenham-based Mitchell spoke with passion about his determination to win the belt in front of a packed stadium. "After this fight, a lot of people will realise I'm the real deal and I've got what it takes to be one of the best British boxers there is," he said.
"Katsidis is very strong, very explosive. He likes to get the job done; he's really exciting. I've knocked out 23 of 30-odd opponents and he's knocked out about the same amount - he comes in brawling, swinging, throwing wild combinations.
"I'm an aggressive, attacking fighter myself, I try to knock people out and I like to go for the kill a lot myself. I'll have the same sort of think on my mind on the night - but I will have to be cute about my work."
Katsidis was equally emphatic about his chances. He has no concerns about fighting thousands of miles from home or his likely reception from the crowd.
"West Ham may have stayed up in the Premiership, but I'll be relegating Mitchell to an also ran," he said. "The fans may all be coming along to support him but by the end of the night they will know what I am all about."
