Introduction

• West Ham United will travel to Southend United on Tuesday night for their sixth pre-season friendly ahead of the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League season.

• The Hammers will only have to make the short 37-mile trip along the A13 to the south Essex seaside to face the Shrimpers, who were relegated to League Two last season.

• West Ham will be looking to make it six wins from as many matches in pre-season. So far, Avram Grant's men have secured victories over League One outfit Peterborough United (2-1), German side VfL Borussia Monchengladbach (2-0), Greek champions Panathinaikos (1-0), League One outfit MK Dons (2-0) and Championship club Ipswich Town (1-0)

• Tuesday's fixture could see Pablo Barrera and Frederic Piquionne make their first starts for the club after their debuts off the bench at Portman Road against Ipswich on Saturday.

• The match will be the first of two final pre-season friendly matches contested before the Barclays Premier League season commences with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday 14 August. Following Tuesday's fixture, Grant's side conclude their preparations with the visit of Spanish Primera League club RC Deportivo La Coruna to the Boleyn Ground on Saturday 7 August.

• The friendly will come ten days after the West Ham youth team tasted success at the same venue, having won the Southend Youth Challenge Cup last weekend.

• Junior Stanislas spent two months on loan at Southend on 27 November 2008. He scored twice on his debut in a 3-1 home FA Cup second-round victory over Luton Town on 29 November 2009. He starred for The Shrimpers in two FA Cup third-round meetings with Chelsea and made a total of six league and three FA Cup appearances, scoring three goals.

• Mark Noble made his first-team debut in the 2-0 home League Cup second-round win against Southend United on 24 August 2004.

West Ham United

• Avram Grant's West Ham United will be aiming to continue the bright start they have made to their pre-season schedule, which has seen them defeat League One new boys Peterborough United (2-1) at London Road, German Bundesliga challengers VfL Borussia Monchengladbach (2-0) in Ruhpolding, Greek double winners Panathinaikos (1-0) in the Austrian town of Kitzbuhel, MK Dons (2-0) at stadium:mk and Ipswich Town (1-0) at Portman Road.

• West Ham will complete their warm-up fixtures with the visit of Spanish Primera Division club RC Deportivo La Coruna to the Boleyn Ground for the SBOBET Cup tie on Saturday 7 August.

• Carlton Cole has been in fine form in pre-season, scoring in the victories over Peterborough, Monchengladbach and MK Dons with just 45 minute run-outs in each contest before adding a fourth in five games against Ipswich on Saturday - his first 90 minutes of the summer.

• Benni McCarthy scored his first goal for the club this summer with a fine half-volley against Monchengladbach.

• Thomas Hitzlsperger has made a bright start to his West Ham career following his summer arrival from SS Lazio, scoring his first goal for the club with a direct free-kick in the 1-0 victory over Panathinaikos.

• Julien Faubert is also off the mark this summer, netting the first against MK Dons, having assisted on McCarthy's goal against Monchengladbach.

• West Ham United have gone 401 minutes without conceding this summer since Peter Kurucz was beaten by Peterborough United's Dave Hibbert in the 49th minute of the meeting on 14 July. Since then there have been clean sheets against Monchengladbach, Panathinaikos, MK Dons and Ipswich.

• Grant's side will kick-off their Barclays Premier League campaign with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday 14 August.

Southend United

• New manager Paul Sturrock has signed two centre-backs in Mark Phillips and Luke Prosser, who were at Brentford and Port Vale respectively last season. They will help fill the gap by the departure of last season's Player of the Year Simon Francis, who has signed for Charlton Athletic.

• Other new recruits this summer who have joined the Blues include Graham Coughlin, Barry Corr, Craig Easton and Peter Gilbert - all of whom played under Sturrock at previous clubs.

• The list of new recruits also include goalkeepers Rhys Evans and Glenn Morris, defenders Moshni Bilel, a Tunisian who had been playing amateur football in Paris, and Sean Clohess, midfield trio Louis Soares, Ryan Hall and Sofiene Zaaboub plus striker Blair Sturrock.

• As well as Francis, Southend have parted company with French duo Francis Laurent and Jean-Francois Christophe along with goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall, midfielder Alan McCormack and defender Adam Barrett.

Team news

• West Ham United manager Avram Grant may give first starts to Pablo Barrera and Frederic Piquionne.

• Matthew Upson was taken off as a precaution midway through the first half on Saturday against Ipswich and it remains to be seen if he will figure.

• Freddie Sears, fresh from a four-goal haul for the reserves on Thursday, will hope to come back into the first-team picture after missing out on Saturday.

• Long-term injury absentees Zavon Hines and Jack Collison (both knee) will not be available while Valon Behrami has been training but not fully after his exertions at the FIFA World Cup.

• For Southend, Plymouth Argyle left-back Chris Barker may get another game as a triallist, as could Peterborough United forward Rene Howe.
