March 2008

Henry Masters

Henry Herbert Masters, or Harry to his friends, passed away peacefully on 6th March 2008, aged 98. He was born on Manor Road, West Ham, 12/6/1909, and despite moving up to the Liverpool in the late 1920's, he never lost his accent or his love for the Hammers. He was a great character who loved to laugh, flirt and sing; often combining the three. Even in the last couple of weeks when he was weak and bedridden, he still found the energy to serenade his care workers and end the song with a kiss on the back of their hands. Of course one of his favourite songs to sing was Bubbles, and this was sung at his funeral. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Joan Drewry (11/03/34 - 23/03/08) sadly died on Easter Day after a short illness. She was a West Ham fan for over 40 years, which she shared with her two brothers, Tony and David, and her nephew Matthew. We were at the Cup Winners' Cup Final in 1965 and at both the recent play-off finals at the Millennium Stadium. To celebrate her 70th birthday, we had a box at Upton Park and had the pleasure of meeting Sir Geoff Hurst. The photograph of her with Sir Geoff had pride of place on her mantlepiece at home.
