Olympiakos confirmed as friendly opponents

West Ham United can confirm that Greek giants Olympiakos will provide the opposition for our final pre-season friendly before the 2006-07 Premiership campaign kicks off.

The game will kick-off at 3.00pm at Upton Park on Saturday, August 12, just a week before the start of the league season, and will be the second time in our history that the two sides have met at the Boleyn Ground.

The first came way back in November 1965, when Hammers began the defence of our European Cup Winners' Cup title with a first round, first leg 4-0 win over the Greek club, and followed that up with a 2-2 draw in Athens in the return leg a week later.

Having recently retained their Championship title in the Greek First Division, double-winners Olympiakos will again participate in the Champions League next season and have now agreed to visit Upton Park as part of their preparations.

In last season's Champions League, they faced Real Madrid, Olympique Lyon and Rosenborg in what was considered to be one of the toughest groups in the competition and, despite finishing bottom, managed to beat already-qualified Madrid in their final match.

Their star man is former Brazil World Cup winner Rivaldo, while several members of Greece's triumphant Euro 2004 squad are also on the books, and former Newcastle United full-back Didier Domi is a recent signing.

Tickets for the match are available at a reduced rate to season ticket holders or club members who book in advance, and can be purchased in person from the Stadium Ticket Office at Upton Park or by calling 0870 112 2700.
