Anton Ferdinand has won the Barclays Premiership Player of
the Month Award for January.
Anton, who celebrates his 21st birthday next Saturday, won the
award following a string of fine performances in the centre of
defence. He played a major role in our away win at Aston Villa on
January 14 and the home victory against Fulham a week later, when
he grabbed the headlines with a goal of the season contender in our
2-1 triumph.
The Hammers defender was given the January Barclays Player of the
Month by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives
from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.
Nic Gault, from the Barclays Awards panel, said: "The
Ferdinand family will be proud today as Anton and Rio have become
the first brothers to win Barclays Player of the Month awards.
Anton is a top class defender and looks set to be a star for many
years to come."
Anton has been an ever-present in our first season back in the
Barclays Premiership, and played a key role in the impressive run
of form which has seen the Club climb to eighth in the table. He is
the first West Ham player to win the award since Stuart Pearce in
February 2001.
