West Ham United Chairman Terence Brown has released the
following statement in tribute to Ron Greenwood, our former manager
who sadly passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of
84…
"On behalf of everyone at West Ham United, I would first like to offer my sincere condolences to Ron's family, who have lost a dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
"Thursday was also an extremely sad day for English football, because we have lost a man who made such a huge impact on the game and, in particular, upon the fortunes of West Ham United.
"Our famous Academy was formed at the outset of the Club in 1895 and was acknowledged in the 1920s and 30s, but it was Ron - after his arrival from Arsenal in 1961 - who developed that approach and took it to the next level. He changed the status of the Club from a small, fairly parochial football team to an internationally-recognised Club and, quite simply, put the name of West Ham United on the map.
"Ron's visionary coaching ideas and foresight helped set the tone for the philosophy and tradition that makes our Club so special, and his name will forever be etched into the history of West Ham United.
"I know our supporters will pay tribute to Ron in a fitting manner before Monday's match against Birmingham City, and we as a Club will ensure his memory lives on at Upton Park."
