WEST Ham United's Lorcan Fitzgerald captained the Republic of
Ireland Under-17 side to a shock 2-1 win over hosts Ukraine in Kiev
in the first phase of qualifying for the Under-17 UEFA
Championship.
The hosts dominated the early going but the Irish youths held on until Dynamo Keiv player Volkov put Ukraine 1-0 up after 34 minutes.
Sean McCaffrey's Irish side still managed an equaliser before the break as Tom Lyons ran in on Michael Daly's through-ball and fired home.
The winner arrived in the final minute as Irish pressure finally paid off.
Terry Dixon was brought down in the box and Graham Carey slotted home from the spot to give Ireland the perfect start.
