Trent Flies Home

Young Hammers defender Trent McClenahan saw his dreams of leading Australia to glory in the FIFA World Youth Championships come to an end on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, who spent three months on loan at Milton Keynes Dons at the end of last season, was left heartbroken as the Socceroos were denied a place in the last 16 of the tournament after conceding a late equaliser against Japan in their final group A game.

Having only managed a draw with Benin in their first match and then slumped to a 3-0 defeat against host nations Holland, the young Aussies needed a win against Japan in Kerkrade to stand any chance of progressing to the knock-out stage.

All looked well when striker Ryan Townsend struck the opening goal with just 15 minutes remaining, but an 87th minute effort from Shunsuke Maeda meant that the Asians jumped above them on goal difference and secured a next round clash against Morocco.

Trent, who appeared in all three matches for Australia, will now enjoy a short holiday before returning to Upton Park in early July to begin pre-season training in the hope of proving himself as a valid squad member for the Premiership campaign ahead.
