HERE Leigh Edwards takes a look back at the links between Hammers and Saturday's visitors to Upton Park, Newcastle United.

ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL

England international Lee Bowyer has played for both West Ham United and Newcastle United. Moving to Upton Park from Leeds United for £100,000 in January 2003, he was unable to prevent West Ham's relegation that season and made ten Premiership appearances prior to joining Newcastle in July 2003. He made a significant contribution as the Magpies were FA Cup semi-finalists and UEFA Cup quarter-finalists last season. However, he was sent off three times during the campaign, one of which involved a well-publicised incident with team-mate Kieron Dyer.

IN SAFE KEEPING

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop is currently in his second spell at West Ham. Moving to St James' Park from Reading for £1,575,000 in August 1995, the Trinidad & Tobago international helped Newcastle finish Premiership runners-up in two consecutive seasons and made 53 Premiership appearances prior to joining West Ham in July 1998. He starred as the Hammers finished fifth in the top-flight in 1998-99 and played 105 Premiership games before following Harry Redknapp to Portsmouth in July 2002, returning to West Ham in July 2005.

LEADING MARKSMAN

Former West Ham United striker Les Ferdinand was leading marksman as Newcastle United finished Premiership runners-up in 1995-96. Moving to St James' Park from QPR for £6,000,000 in June 1995, the England international starred alongside Alan Shearer as Newcastle were also Premiership runners-up in 1996-97 and netted 41 goals in 68 Premiership games before being sold to Spurs for £6,000,000 in August 1997. He joined West Ham for £200,000 in January 2003 but was unable to prevent relegation, scoring twice in 14 Premiership outings prior to joining Leicester City in July 2003.

He played for the Magpies in two consecutive FA Cup finals and netted 44 goals in 303 League games before being sold to Derby County for £250,000 in February 2002. Joining West Ham in August 2003, he made 16 First Division appearances before moving to Oldham Athletic in November 2004.

He was an influential figure as the Hammers won the Second Division title in 1957-58 and finished sixth in the top-flight in 1958-59, scoring 45 times in 76 League outings while at Upton Park until injury forced his retirement.

CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS

Former Newcastle United striker Paul Goddard was a key figure in West Ham's 1980-81 Second Division championship success. Moving to Upton Park from QPR for £800,000 in August 1980, the England international also starred as the Hammers took Liverpool to a League Cup final replay in 1980-81. He was joint top scorer in 1982-83, netting 54 times in 170 League games before being sold to Newcastle for £415,000 in November 1986. Helping the Magpies avoid relegation that season, he scored 19 goals in 61 League outings prior to joining Derby County for £425,000 in July 1988.

TWO SPELLS

Ex-Newcastle United striker Pop Robson had two spells at West Ham. Signing professional at St James' Park in November 1962, the England U-23 international starred as Newcastle won the Second Division title in 1964-65 and Fairs Cup in 1969, netting 82 goals in 206 League games prior to joining West Ham for £120,000 in February 1971. He starred as the Hammers avoided relegation that season and scored 18 times in 63 League outings prior to joining Brighton in August 2002. The likes of Franz Carr, John Dowsey, Jimmy Loughlin and Ike Tate also played for both clubs.
