"There are more English keepers in our division but the keeper of whoever gets promoted will get more noticed.
"That has happened to Robert Green at Norwich - but there are a lot of good English keepers around."
Steve watched with interest as David James made a costly mistake against Austria - and knows it comes with the territory of being a keeper.
"Anyone can make a mistake like that but he is man enough to take it but Paul Robinson did well against Poland.
"I know him well and he took his chance - he will probably keep the shirt now."
It was at Sheffield United last season that Steve stepped into David James shoes after the latter had been sold to Manchester City, and he says:
"David James left and I knew it would give me the chance to play but that is in the past and you just have to look forward to the next game.
"It is the same fixture but a different circumstance - and we need a win to get us going again."
He is still on a learning curve, of course, and he reveals:
"I am always looking to improve, and I want to get my kicking and concentration better so I won't make so many mistakes."
He is confident of promotion this season and concludes:
"I have told my mates back home that we will definitely go up because you can just see the talent we have got in the squad compared to other clubs."
