Watched by Alan Pardew - and with Tony Carr taking the team in the absence of Roger Cross who was scouting Sunday's opponents Wolves in their draw against Liverpool - schoolboy Mark Noble's through ball set up Greg Pearson who held off a challenge to power home a header before the break.
David Noble made it 2-0 in the second half in a game in which keeper Chris Weale, on trial from Yeovil, was rarely stretched.
Says Tony:
"I thought we were excellent with a young side - although, to be fair, so were they.
"The two teams were well matched but we came out really well on the night; the match was played at a good tempo and we showed good spirit.
"Carrick and Pearson were a handful up front and Blewitt and Lumsden in defence were excellent."
As for Chris' performance, Tony adds:
"He had an opportunity to show what he could do; there was one occasion when Ryan Smith, who had played for the first team the day before, broke through - and Chris made a very good save.
"Other than that, it was back passes and crosses he had to deal with - which he did very well."
