"I feel confident; it is a big game, the start of the season, and I am looking forward to it.
"There are a lot of games but you have to look forward to them.
"We are building up to the season now and I have set myself targets; it is a case of going to Christmas and pushing on from there.
"There are a lot of fixtures between now and then, so we need to get those out of the way and concentrate on the second half of the year.
"And I think Christian Dailly, with Scotland as well, will have about eight games in five weeks - but playing keeps you sharp.
"We need to win away from home more than we did last year and keep on a roll; we don't want to happen what happened last year and hopefully we will all have that extra 10% to dig in and get the victories.
"We don't want to leave it until the end of the season.
"It is a tough league but it was last year as well; it is difficult to get points at places like Sheffield United but the cream of the crop will always come through.
"Hopefully we can be like Norwich were last year."
Assessing the Leicester side, he adds:
"They have got some new players like Martin Keown, David Connolly, and others, but you just have to concentrate on what we have.
"We signed some new players as well, and it is all about gelling together and doing well."
Steve and his team mates will be seeing David Connolly for the first time since his summer move, and Steve says:
"It is business when you get on the pitch; you have got to do it for yourself and West Ham.
"He is a good player; he is tricky and a handful but we know what to expect from him.
"It is not like we don't know anything about him; he is a real threat, and we have to manage that.
"They have a lot of experience but we have Teddy Sheringham who has been around at the very highest level.
"He has been getting on with the lads and he is looking good; he is different class the way he reads the game and he is good to have in our team."
Steve is enjoying working with James Walker, the summer signing from Walsall, and adds:
"He is a good lad and Ludo is always caning me, him, and Darren Behcet - we fly around everywhere but it keeps you on your toes."
Steve is certainly expecting a tighter game than the last of the preseason matches, the 4-4 draw with Anderlecht, and he says:
"That was a good game and we did really well, passing it around.
"It is a shame they got a man sent off because that changed the game, but it was a good run-out and we should be all right for Saturday."
As for the sending off of his opposite number, he says:
"It was a bit harsh on their goalkeeper and the game just went a little bit when their man went."
Steve was unable to save any of the penalties that won Anderlecht the Out Performance Display cup on Saturday and he reflects:
"I thought I was going to get one - but the important thing is to do it in the league.
"The main thing is to get points on Saturday, against a team that have got a big squad."
