With Christian Dailly admitting there is a groundswell of support in the dressing room for Trevor Brooking, David does say: "He has done a very good job in very difficult circumstances and the lads - and the coaching staff as well - have pulled together."
But he is circumspect about the chances of Trevor changing his mind, and adds: "I am sure he would do a very good job if he stayed on but it is unfair to put that pressure on him. He is his own man and he has said that he doesn't particularly want it so we will see who comes in."
If not Trevor, then, who should it be?
"As long as they like me and play me I have no preference!
"If they are a good, honest manager that is fine."
Republic of Ireland international David is one of four West Ham players on senior international duty this week, the others being David James with England and Christian Dailly - still receiving ongoing dental work after his collision at Rotherham - and Don Hutchison for Scotland.
