"Jermain has shown a good response and I have spoken to him; he understands that I have a lot of sympathy with him over the two incidents, I really do," says Alan.
"I have heard a couple of rumours but I don't wanting people reading any other issue into it - that would be total rubbish.
"He was trying his damnedest and he was on fire - it was such a blow for him, his exuberance got the better of him and I don't think he did touch the guy.
"The tackle was at such speed and he was determined to block the ball going forward that he has been caught out by a bit of professionalism, but he will learn from that.
"I have got to be honest and say I think he is going to be massive for us this year.
"He is learning quickly as he needs to; there are always incidents that make you grow stronger and make you grow as a person and that will be one incident he looks back on, I am sure."
Alan says he has learnt to live with the rumours of Jermain leaving the club, though he admits it doesn't help the player, the club, or the fans.
"It doesn't, but you can't get away from that because of the club and the type of player he is," he shrugs.
"He is quick and he is exciting and he is a major catalyst for us, who puts teams on the back foot.
"If he was to be removed from the team that would give us a major problem and I have to be honest - since I have been at West Ham, and talking to Trevor, I think he is totally committed while he is here to do his stuff for us.
"I spoke to him about a couple of things that I think are important in terms of the club and him, which I think he has taken on board, and at the moment I am very, very happy with him.
"I honestly feel I can improve him and I want him to stay and I can't stress that too highly.
"The bottom line is that outside influences will mean other people will always be interested to have a piece of him because there is a meal ticket there for somebody - and a substantial one at that.
"We have to be on our guard and protect him - and that is what I am going to try and do."
