Local Schools Pitch In

Every Tuesday, local Newham schools are currently the first to benefit from the revamped Learning Through Football programme.

The aim is to introduce new elements of learning, using football as a vehicle. The main objective is to encourage integration via participation learning, where football serves as common ground for young people from various backgrounds. The format of the day consists of a practical session on the pitch. The children are coached on a specific topic with particular emphasis placed on the correct procedures of warming up. A 45 minute ground tour proceeds, informing children about the history of the Club and players' routines on Match Days.

A fitness, diet and nutrition talk is then delivered and finally, a video and discussion session on "Show Racism the Red Card" takes place in the Thames Lounge. Responsibility for course content and delivery is taken by Mick King and Andrew Morgan, which is reflective of several joint initiatives between the Asians in Football Project and Football Community which will benefit the young people from the local borough. It is hoped that other local boroughs will participate at a later date.
