Community

In 1986 the Footballers Further Education and VocationalTraining Society formed the national Football in the Community Scheme in order to promote strong links between professional football clubs and the community.

The West Ham Community Development Scheme was set up in 1990 with a view to working in the surrounding boroughs. The community team are; Roger Morgan, Andrew Morgan, Steve Tapley, Mark Newson, Phil Church, Craig Glashan, Barry Saville and Luke Williams with secretarial support from Jacqui Jones, and not to forget their team of part-time coaches who are all working together through a wide range of sporting and social activities at various locations around London and the South-East.

Our existing programme encourages social exclusion and integration using football as a vehicle to maximise personal development of young people, The Community Scheme benefits all areas of the community and target under-represented groups such as young people, the elderly, ethnic minorities and disability groups.

The Juniors Hammers Club has also been developed with the help of the Community Scheme in order to encourage children to become involved in the football club.

GIRLS AND WOMENS PROJECT

The girls and women's project aims to build on the solid foundations of projects already established within Football in the Community scheme at the club. The project aims to increase the opportunities for girls and women to play and coach and to raise the profile of the girls and women's game using the club and its resources and working in partnership with key agencies such as the Football Association, schools, local authorities, and regeneration agencies amongst others to achieve this.

The overall aims of Girls and Women's Project are:

To encourage participation by girls, especially teenagers in football with the aim of encouraging a healthier lifestyle and their continued participation in sport and physical activity when they leave school.

To present a positive image of girls football and to have a real impact by supporting girls to have equal opportunities to play and coach at whatever level they aspire to.

To offer opportunities in football and support for specific priority groups including young people, ethnic minority communities, girls and women as well as those who are socially excluded.

To challenge racism and sexism in football and contribute towards encouraging an inclusive and united sport that brings together individuals and communities.
