Trev Optimistic On Les

Trevor Brooking says he is hopeful that Les Ferdinand will sign a new contract at Upton Park to end his career.

He is aware that other clubs could be looking at acquiring his services for his final season, but he says: "Of the ones that were out of contract Les Ferdinand was one that we wanted to offer a new deal to, although it depends on the terms we can agree - and if one or two Premiership clubs come in for him that might be a problem.

"But hopefully, with him having enjoyed his spell with us, we can sit down and agree something."

Of transfer dealings in general this summer, and the effect of relegation, he says: "We were always going to be in a situation this summer where there were quite a few falling out of contract as you would say, and I suppose the frustration from the club's point of view is that for the first time for a while we would have been in a position perhaps, if we had got the Premiership TV money, to have strengthened the squad.

"But of course that wasn't to be because we have gone down and it was a case of, with some of the players being on high contracts, there wasn't a chance to offer them new ones or take it from there."
