David, who has just signed a new contract at Upton Park, says: "I was very pleased to sign on Friday.
"It is going to be difficult to get in the first team as there are still great players at West Ham and I am shocked we went down.
"But I will do my best; I am looking forward to the challenge.
"I feel I did okay last year, and obviously the gaffer felt the same, as he has given me another year.
"This season is make or break - it is that important for me."
David originally signed in January after leaving Arsenal on a free transfer, having found first team opportunities at Highbury hard to come by.
"I want to put that behind me and get on with West Ham," he says.
"I think we will be back in the Premiership next season and then I will be hoping to sign longer term for West Ham - that is my main aim, along with getting West Ham back in the top flight."
