Tony: Harsh Charge?

Tony Gale feels that Dennis Bergkamp's charge by the F.A. of improper conduct following an alleged incident during the match against West Ham in January is "harsh."

Lee Bowyer was caught by what appeared to be Bergkamp's elbow just before he crossed the ball for the crucial second goal at Highbury - Thierry Henry's first headed goal in the Premiership.

But he claimed afterwards he 'tried' to apologise to him.

As for his own view on the incident, Tony says:

"I think it is a bit harsh on Denis Bergkamp personally; I think he just tried to get across him with his arm.

"Lee Bowyer was fouled but I didn't think he meant it as it came out, so in my opinion it should have been a free kick to West Ham."

Steve Lomas was controversially sent off in the same game but the Hammers were gamely hanging on until that incident.

Interestingly, Arsenal have said they 'will study the video once it is received from The FA' though of course, as is common practice, already have a video of the game from immediately after it.

They are likely to defend the charge.
