Alan On Captaincy

Alan Pardew says he feels that making David James captain on Saturday against Walsall was the right decision.

He does not subscribe to the theory that goalkeepers don't make captains, and explains:

"Everyone needs a little boost and I just felt Jamo has had a very good season up until the last few games where he has made a couple of decisions in games that he has been disappointed with - so I thought this would be good for him, and certainly he is a strong leader type character.

"I thought he played very well on the day, actually, so it obviously gave him what he wanted."

As for the selection of Hayden Mullins at right back when Tomas Repka moved across to centre half in the absence through illness of Christian Dailly, he adds:

"I think Hayden balanced the team up better and having him and Marlon down the right was a bonus for us, because Mattie and Quinny on the other side was working well - as it has done for most of the year.

"Hayden and Marlon were both out of position and I am forcing them to play there to some extent.

"If Marlon plays the right side for us not only can he be a threat down the right but he can score goals - which he did on Saturday.

"So I am trying to educate him in that role so he has to learn quick - and Hayden will put a performance in, wherever you put him, without a problem."

As for recent form, he adds:

"I just feel we obviously need to get going with some wins but we are certainly showing signs and certainly on Saturday against a decent side we controlled proceedings with 10 men.

"You can only look at your recent performances and in our last five games we have won two, drawn two, and lost one - so we are starting to get the results we want and we need to get more consistent than that, even."
