A pair of fine results for these two in their last respective outings has made this tie a very interesting one.

Following their win against Fulham on Wednesday, any pressure on West Ham boss Glenn Roeder will have been alleviated, unless wins are suddenly bad and no-one has explained it properly. The side played well in the week and ultimately deserved to take the spoils by virtue of being far more creative in attack than their opponents. The Hammers had seven accurate attempts at Loftus Road, including Paolo di Canio's winning penalty, to Fulham's three.

But West Ham have as yet not won at home in the Premiership in 2002-03, and Roeder will not want to have to go back to the drawing board having seen things not go to plan this weekend.

If Everton play anything like they did last weekend it could well be another unhappy afternoon for the Upton Park crowd. While all the attention has centred around a certain young, titian-headed striker and his 'wondergoal' that ended Arsenal's unbeaten run last weekend, little has been said of the side's overall performance, which was of course good enough to take a point from the Gunners before the aforementioned forward's belter.

The Toffeemen refused to allow the champions to settle on the ball and it was noticeable the number of times a Gunner was caught in possession from behind. The home side made a remarkable 36 challenges during the match - twice as many as the visiting side - and ultimately hurried Arsenal into making enough mistakes to wreck their hopes of winning the match.

But whether Everton will be able to raise their game as far for a side such as West Ham is questionable. The overall pass completion for these two sides has been liable to cause three out of every 10 passes to go astray, so it may take a flash, or flashes, of inspiration to settle this encounter.
