Paolo Di Canio says the discussion that took place on Friday before the game at Sunderland revitalised the squad.
"We showed strong character and had a meeting the day before the game which clarified a few points from each other, and we went out as a team," he says.
"Speaking is always good; if you don't speak, you don't explain because someone can think differently from another.
"If you talk about ideas you then can know what your team mates think and behave accordingly but if you just play for yourself you go nowhere.
"When you have a meeting like that it gives to everybody brains and the energy to look at ourselves in the mirror and to say to ourselves maybe we have to give a little bit more because no we are struggling.
"It was important to win and that is what we did, but we have to forget that now and concentrate on Fulham.
"I was very happy; everyone worked hard and we deserved it because we played as a squad even if we couldn't play fantastic football."
But he is warning fans not to expect too much pretty football in the weeks to come if results have to be ground out.
"Unfortunately when you are at the bottom you can't mix fantastic football with results," he says.
"At the moment we only need three points every game we play, and then, game by game, we can improve our football.
"But up to now it didn't work so now we have to give extra to get out of that situation, we spoke about that, and everyone played fantastic.
"At Sunderland we couldn't play differently because they played a lot of long balls so it was difficult to defend in our box and then start and run for 80 yards all together."
"Now I have to give a bit more and say I didn't give enough since we started the season even if I think we gave a lot of things."
