Former Hammers hero Frank McAvennie says the key to winning at the Stadium of Light is to frustrate the home supporters.
"I'm going to watch the game on Saturday - and I hope we get that win," says Frank, who is based in Newcastle.
"The fans didn't like Wilkinson getting the job so we it would be nice to get their fans against him.
"The first 15 minutes will be important and if we can make sure Sunderland are playing terribly the fans will go against the team and we will win it!"
Frank is backing Glenn Roeder to turn things around at Upton Park, and says he should be left to get on with his task.
"It is ridiculous; other managers are touting his job and that is scandalous," he says.
"I won't mention them because they don't deserve to be mentioned, but people are saying 'I will take the West Ham job' when Glenn already has it.
"It is not making his job any easier and I feel for him; of course I have great respect for him.
"He came in and did ever so well last year - it hasn't been so good this year but it is still the start of the season - give him a chance."
Frank believes the current bad times will be character building for youngsters such as Joe Cole and Michael Carrick, and he adds:
"It will be better for the lads' development, playing in a losing side; you have got to take the good with the bad and I think they will come out better players as a result.
"As long as you learn from it, it is all part of the apprenticeship..."
