Glenn might otherwise have expected to have a post match chat with his friend Reid, as is the tradition for managers at Sunderland, had he not of course been replaced by Wilkinson and new assistant Steve Cotterill recently.
Say Glenn:
"I was particularly sad for Peter Reid; I know him well and he has given seven and a half years of his life to the football club.
"In that time an awful lot of things in that time have been very positive like moving to the new stadium, and finishing seventh a couple of years running in the Premiership.
"But I have spoken to him and he was philosophical about it - as he always is.
"I said to him that when he bounces back - which he will do - he will bounce back even higher.
"If he had still been in charge it wouldn't have made the game any easier; all Peter's teams were difficult to play against and I am sure Howard's team will be as well.
"I worked under him for four or five days leading up to the game against France after Glenn Hoddle left his post.
"Those four or five days gave me a good insight into Howard who is very articulate and intelligent.
"He is an excellent coach and he has such vast knowledge what he doesn't know about football probably isn't worth knowing.
"My biggest concern, though, is making sure we are in a positive frame of mind at Sunderland, and that when we play we play with plenty of courage and bravery.
"We have to make sure our own house is in order and we know that there will be battles to be won all over the pitch.
"I have to make sure we are in the right frame of mind, the frame of mind we were in against Chelsea for the whole 90 minutes - and that we get a repeat of that performance."
