Trevor Sinclair insists that the England World Cup squad will be decided on players' domestic form, not just what happened in the friendly against Italy and the one to come against Paraguay.
Amidst the analysis of the defeat midweek, and the spotlight on Joe Cole in the media recently, Trevor says that consistency in a claret and blue shirt is the key.
"There is one more England game to go, but I think it is more about what happens in the games during the rest of the season that is really going to make the difference between people going on the tour and not," he says.
"The main thing is have good performances for your club and that will give you a better chance of making the squad; my aim is to play as well as I can to give myself the best opportunity, and that's all that can be asked of me.
"Mr. Eriksson seems to have seen a lot of most of the players this season and he is always there and he has always got people watching, so it is important to put a good performance in every game.
"It wasn't too bad on Wednesday; it is the first game I have had for quite a while so it was just good to get another game under my belt, especially with it being an England cap.
"It was a difficult game to play in with the Italians being very strong at squeezing and closing down space, and a lot of people have said it was quite a boring first half - but that was down to good closing by them.
"It was a good test; they are some of the best players in the world, or definitely in Europe, playing on the night and it was good to put yourself against them to see how you did."
Trevor was one of only two players to get more than 45 minutes' action, and he says:
"I think there was only me and Bridgey who stayed on after half time; the other lads were given assurances that they would only play 45 minutes with so many important games coming up.
"I felt comfortable on the right hand side and that we had more attacking edge in the second half, and the goal came from that."
Trevor says that the criticism of Joe Cole is ludicrous, and defends his Hammers team mate to the hilt.
"For a young man I think he showed great ability and battling qualities for our goal; he lost possession and won it straight back to set up Robbie Fowler, which was really good to see," says Trevor.
"It was unfortunate that he gave the ball away for their first goal, but to be fair he had a lot of pressure on him, and still the lad has got a lot of work to do; he has bent it in from 30 yards, so a lot of credit has to go to the goalscorer as well.
"He got the ball in the midfield and straight away someone closed him down and when he got past him he had another close him down, and it was difficult for Joe to find the space to get rid of the ball, then they made a last ditch tackle, and if that hadn't been made he would probably have been running at their defence.
"Then he has bent it into the corner from a distance, and you can't just put that down to Joe's mistake; it was a fantastic finish and you have to give the scorer credit for that."
Joe took the performance to heart, but Trevor insists:
"It shows that he cares and wants to improve all the time, and that's why he takes it the way he does, but he will be fine and I'm sure he will put in a great performance on Saturday to show everybody that he has got over it."
And he says people are forgetting the contribution he made for the England goal, adding:
"It was bobbling around, he never gave it up, and he managed to win the ball in the end and slide a great little ball through for Robbie Fowler to finish."
Trevor is looking forward to two games in three days and adds:
"I am ready for that; I am looking forward to it, having missed a lot of games recently, and I am looking forward to it - I am enthusiastic to play in each game.
"We just have to look at Ipswich first; it is a very important game and we have to make sure we don't lose it, and obviously a win would be a lot better as it would take a lot of pressure off us.
"We look at this game as the most important, and once we get this one out of the way we can look at the future; it is very tight at the bottom and everyone is scrapping for the points, so we want to make sure we don't get dragged into that scrap too much.
"I am fit and well and looking forward to the matches."
