Steve: I'll Be Ready

Steve Bywater says he will be okay for training ahead of the 2002/03 season.

Steve, who had to leave the England U21 squad in the summer because of injury ahead of them finishing their campaign in the summer, says:

"I was just training, doing some some shooting practice, and the ball caught my wrist funny.

"It was a bad sprain and because the games were so close, having done it on the Friday, they wanted me to train on the Monday.

"But I couldn't do it; having seen the specialist over there, he said I needed seven to 10 days, and that I might as well go home."

It was a disappointing campaign for the youngsters, which of course included Jermain Defoe, and Steve adds:

"We beat Switzerland and they qualified - but the lads did all right.

"The injury is okay now but it took a couple of weeks; there is a lot of fluid on the bone.

"It was the same wrist as I had done the scaphoid on but it was a different injury as the X-rays and the scans showed.

"I am fine now and I am doing a little bit of work."
