He explains: "I had three or four back-up plans already made and we have put them into practice accordingly, in consultation with Glenn.
"There is a certain amount of time they have to have off but they can't just join pre-season and risk injury, so we have to adjust the training load, and that has been modified to allow them recovery time.
"Their involvement in friendly games will be monitored. Trevor played the most matches in the World Cup and he will have his plans altered substantially to bear in mind what he has been doing in the 'off' season.
"The main thing was that we had three or four contingency plans depending on how far we went through the competition.
"I had been in contact with the players while they were out there and also with the trainers from the England squad.
"They came to the ground before they had gone away and discussed things with us, so the England camp and myself have all been fully informed as to what has been going on, so that they don't train them out of context with my work - and vice versa.
"I know what they have been doing while they have been away and we have had training plans whizzing back and forward."
John says that most of the players have been working during the summer, and adds: "It is not just the England lads who have been training. The other players have all been given their own training programmes for the off season.
"It gets them ready for the pre-season for those who were wanting to do something. I didn't want them to go nuts because you can do too much too early.
"Part of my job is to modify what they do, and a lot of players left with the training guidelines for the holiday period, and in addition to that a lot have been in touch while they were away.
"Most players tend to get a bit bored just sitting around and the tendency is to go out running, but you might as well do stuff that is relevant to what we are going to do in the season.
"Because this season builds on last season, the training will be slightly different, so I need them to know what to do. It is a case of informing them 'if you are going to do work this is what I would like you to do on certain days'.
"We give them specifications on how long and how much to do - and how hard it should be."
There should be no news of further injuries when the players report back, and John adds: "The medical team have not come back to me with any major problems and I gather from Glenn there aren't any major issues.
"Don Hutchison is doing well. He is on schedule and I haven't heard anything negative about his training.
"John Green is happy that he is progressing, as is Paolo. We have been in contact with both the players and everything is moving along positively; there are no snags along the way."
John is working around the challenge of the building improvements going on at Chadwell Heath, and he adds: "There are modifications at the training ground because there is demolition and building work going on but Plan B comes out, as we anticipated this!"
