Captain Cole Continues

Joe Cole will carry on as captain of West Ham, for "the foreseeable future", reveals Glenn Roeder.

Joe retained the captaincy despite the return to action of Steve Lomas last week an, of course, in the continued absence of Paolo Di Canio.

"Joe was captain at Old Trafford after doing very well at the Riverside the week before," says Glenn "and he is very much in the learning stages of his own positions that he plays for us; I am not expecting him to be pulling other players up here there and everywhere.

"I expect him to be leading by example, which he has done, and I expect Steve Lomas, our very valued club captain, to help Joe when he feels he needs to.

"Steve has got a lot of experience, but, as people will see from my programme notes on Saturday, when I give more in depth and detailed reasons, it will be explained why I feel Joe can take the responsibility on as captain for the foreseeable future."

The move has been met with the approval of Steve himself and senior statesman Nigel Winterburn.
