Newton's Back

Adam Newton is included in a young reserve side to face Southampton on Monday evening at St. Mary's stadium - a match that is almost certainly Sven Andersson's last in a West Ham shirt.

Adam has returned from a loan spell at Leyton Orient and is considering an offer from them as well as the opportunity of signing a new one year deal at Upton Park.

If he does move on, West Ham will be entitled to ask for a fee for him as he is under 24.

Sven, who was brought in as cover for Shaka Hislop - himself out of contract this summer - and David James when Craig Forrest was diagnosed with testicular cancer, was signed on a short term contract.

Of the other keepers, incidentally, David Forde is recovering from an elbow operation, while Steve Bywater is on loan at Cardiff City.

The senior players have been given the rest of the week off, and Glenn Roeder says:

"We felt they deserved it - but they will get a full week's training before the last game of the season against Bolton."

TEAM: Andersson, Johnson, Iriekpen, Soma, Lumsden, Newton, Byrne, Carrick G, Allen, Riza, Mehmet.

Subs: Jackson, Ward, Ferdinand, Eastwood, Smith.
