Christian Dailly says that he is worried about the ease with which
players are getting booked and sent off this season.
West Ham received a first red card of the season at Middlesbrough on Saturday when debutant Tomas Repka was sent off after a second yellow card, and Christian complains:
"I thought the card was very harsh; refs invite it on themselves sometimes, having to send people off.
"The first one is a nothing booking and the second one is a nothing booking as well - cards are getting thrown about like confetti these days.
"It affects teams, it affects fans, and it affects everyone in the game.
"Cards are shown with an arrogance that you can't believe at times, but you just have to get on with it."
Nonetheless, he does not seek to use Tomas' expulsion as a reason for the defeat, and admits the damage was done while all 22 players were on the field.
"I thought we were a wee bit sluggish all over the park early in the game but even when it is like that you can sometimes hold out and come in at 0-0 at half time," he says.
"But in the end a couple of lapses from the boys have made it disappointing."
Christian feels, however, that Tomas should settle in quickly after the shock of his introduction to English football, and says:
"We haven't had any time to work, really, but he is a good player and he will do well for us.
"It's good that we have got this full week ahead of us to work on a few things."
And, while being concerned about West Ham's position at the bottom of the table, he is not despondent.
Christian, still with two black eyes sustained at Reading, explains:
"We've only had four games, we are a game behind everyone else, and we need to get some points on the board.
"It is not going to be easy against Newcastle but we are looking to win that game.
"The spirit is undiminished - it is great here.
"We've got to keep trying to keep working away and hope that the tide will turn for us - and that we will get a few goals."
