Glenn Roeder says the way his denial of not wanting to sign Warren
Barton was originally reported on Friday morning did not express
his true views.
He insists that while he has not looked to sign Barton, he respects his professional capabilities.
"I'm very upset the way it has been reported that I'm not interested in Warren," says Glenn.
"He has had a fine career at Wimbledon firstly, and then a long and distinguished career at Newcastle.
"The way it was reported that I wasn't interested in him has upset me and it is completely wrong.
"I would want to disassociate myself with those comments; there is certainly someone trying to create some mischief and that has not pleased me.
"The reason that I wouldn't be looking at Warren Barton as far as bringing him to the club is concerned is because Sebastien Schemmel has done so well.
"It is a new position for him at right back and there seems very little point bringing in another right back when the one you have got is doing so well.
"It was a non-starter right from the off; as Sebastien has got the shirt at the moment, and deservedly so.
"That being the case, I wouldn't be interested in bringing Warren to the club, but I can only reiterate what a fine career he has had.
"Warren is a first team player in his own right - players like that expect to play in the first team."
It was originally reported that Glenn had said words to the effect that Paolo had made his life difficult when West Ham met Newcastle recently.
But Glenn stresses:
"Anyone who knows me knows that to say 'Paolo ran rings round him' isn't the way I talk about things.
"In any case, the goal was probably the only time Paolo got past Warren, and he finished with great aplomb.
"The whole way it was reported has left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
"If Warren sees the quotes he will be disappointed, like anyone else would be; I would be myself.
"I certainly wouldn't want to go down that route of upsetting people necessarily; it is certainly not my style, and there is no reason to do so."
The original story that said Glenn was looking to sign Barton came from a newspaper in Newcastle - but there was no checking the veracity of the claims with Glenn himself.
"I haven't spoken to Bobby Robson for a while so why this story has suddenly appeared in Newcastle I don't know," he explains.
"There will be some mole somewhere taking pleasure from this whole unsavoury business."
He does, however, stress that he IS looking around for players whose contracts run out in the summer, and says:
"We are looking at all sorts of targets that are Bosmans in the summer and that we would have to enter the transfer market to bring to the club.
"The search for good players never stops."
