He was selected along with Michael Carrick for the friendly with Mexico on Friday and the World Cup qualifier with Greece early in June, after showing how fired up he was at Middlesbrough.
It may be fair to say Michael had one of his quieter games, and has admitted recently he was exhausted.
Joe, on the other hand, was, according to popular vote, the Hammers' best player at the Riverside, and he says:
"Yesterday was important for me because I wanted to get in the England squad - and now I want to make my debut.
"That would cap a great season for me personally; runner up as young player of the year as voted for by the players, and hopefully an England debut at 19.
"I still have a lot of work to do and my season is not over until the 6th of June.
"Generally for the team it has been disappointing but for myself I've cemented my place in the team."
But he insists there is more to come, and adds:
"People have only seen 10% of me so far - I have so much more to offer.
"Like I say, I am looking forward to these England games and maybe I have a good chance.
"I believe in myself - and I believe in West Ham.
"It would be the stuff that dreams are made of if I can get an England debut; I'll be the happiest person in the world."
The squad did not include Frank Lampard, who is currently recovering from a groin operation while considering his future.
He would have been fit come the weekend, but clearly Sven-Goran Eriksson does not want to risk a player returning from injury at the end of a long season.
Meanwhile, the club are not looking to comment on any individual candidates, or indeed non-candidates, for the West Ham manager's job until an appointment is agreed.
Our lips are sealed!
