With both sides safe from relegation, the final match of the season
will provide caretaker boss Glenn Roeder with the chance to field
one or two youngsters in his one and only match in charge.
Paolo Di Canio is missing after undergoing a sinus operation back in Italy, allowing 18-year-old Jermain Defoe to make his Premiership debut after a highly successful loan spell at Bournemouth. Shaun Byrne, Adam Newton and Omer Riza are travelling, and it is also likely that Scott Minto will return from injury for his one and only appearance of the season.
Definitely out of the trip to the Riverside Stadium are Nigel Winterburn, Frank Lampard and John Moncur, while Igor Stimac is doubtful after suffering a back injury against Southampton.
