Ludek was born in Czechoslovakia and played his early football with local team, Banik Ostrava, before signing for the Hammers in February 1990 for a bargain £284,000. He went on to make 365 senior appearances for the Club, his natural agility, unselfish bravery and spectacular shot stopping making him a popular figure at Upton Park.
Affectionately known as 'Ludo', he was first choice goalkeeper for the majority off his career at Upton Park and made 162 consecutive appearances between March 1992 and December 1995, before that run was broken by suspension. A successful playing career also saw him win 41 Full Caps for Czechoslovakia.
After nearly nine years with the Hammers, he was granted a free transfer in December 1998 and was snapped up by Queens Park Rangers. There he went on to command a regular first-team place before a long injury lay-off restricted his opportunities. Following relegation, QPR released the giant Czech on a free transfer and he is now looking to continue his successful association with football as a coach.
The Club are delighted to have someone of Ludo's experience and ability on board as part of the restructuring of the coaching staff under Glenn Roeder. He will play an important part in the development of the young goalkeepers at West Ham, while also training the senior keepers, some of whom he worked with as a player at Upton Park.
West Ham United would also like to take this opportunity to thank Les Sealey for his valued service to the Club and wish him every success in the future.
