Britton Shines

Roger Cross says that it is up to the youngsters at the club to force their way into the first team reckoning as soon as possible.

He oversaw the 5-1 reserve team win over Heybridge Swifts while the first team were winning at Peterborough but insists that those players currently out of the limelight, such as Omer Riza and Adam Newton - both now in their early 20s - must show more consistency to force their way into Glenn Roeder's plans.

"Everyone has shown an excellent attitude, right through from the young boys to the seniors and we are all very happy," he says of the new regime.

"I had no doubts that it would be any other way; the lads are very buoyant and it is all going very well.

"It was a good run out at Heybridge; we had quite a young side and it was a good performance."

Picking out his man of the match, he says: "On the night I think Leon Britton was our best player; we played him in off the left hand side and he opened the game up, was terrific, and got the first goal.

"He is not the tallest of players but we are hoping he is going to grow a bit soon.

"But he is very tough and strong now, getting stronger all the time, and he can really play.

"They have got every opportunity and it's all about performances.

"I was very happy with Richard Garcia as well; he has been out almost a season and he has now played almost two full games and hasn't missed a day of training. We are just looking forward for him to push on.

"Adam Newton needs to break through this season, and now it is up to him - only consistent performances can do that."

If West Ham play 4-4-2 this season, how would erstwhile wing-back Adam best be employed?

"I think his best position is at wide right which would give him space to run at people because we know how quick he can be," says Roger.

"Last night he showed that he can cross a decent ball as well; he crossed a terrific one in for the fourth goal.

"He went on loan for a long time last season and we didn't see much of him but hopefully he can push into that first team group now."

Adding his thoughts on whether the training ground atmosphere has changed since it has become more 'private', he says: "It's not really different, you just get on with it and don't take a lot of notice of it anyway.

"It is just a lot quieter now and the voices can be heard!"
