Well, one to be precise, as he learned when speaking about the first pre-season game of the campaign on the eve of the second one, at Peterborough on Tuesday night.
"It was a very pleasing game at Stortford and the pitch looked as good as you would expect for this time of year.
"The way the team played was good, and it worked out nicely.
"I'm settling in quickly having been here ten days or so, and I have no complaints.
"The game was not like a pre-season friendly as I was saying to Ken Monkou.
"No, hang on, not him, the other Moncs, John Moncur!
"First games are usually pretty bad affairs but that was much better, and it was a pleasing performance."
David now takes his gloves - and, perhaps, a copy of the Hammers' handbook - to Peterborough United as the first team take on their first league opposition in a friendly on Tuesday, facing Barry Fry's second division side, in a testimonial match for Margaret and Derek Poole.
The pair have both given an incredible 32 years' service each behind the scenes at London Road, and Glenn Roeder says: "It is a very worthwhile testimonial for Margaret and Derek, and ironically Margaret has always been a lifelong West Ham supporter, so to have them for her testimonial is a dream for her.
"Hopefully it will be a big crowd and another good run out for us.
"There are occasionally high profile testimonials where the boys are already secure and you question sometimes why they are just taking more money off the fans in what is already a very expensive business, following your own team.
"But this one is very deserving and I hope Margaret and Derek get a decent crowd and a good pay day."
As, for David, he is already showing signs of optimism for the new season, and he adds: "I joined the club for all the right reasons and with Glenn in charge I think there is a very good chance of fulfilling the ambitions.
"A lot of the stuff that has been going on so far has been good."
