Gale's Pep Talk

Tony Gale says the signing of Josep 'Pep' Guardiola would be a great boost for the club if it comes off.

"Glenn has got some good midfield players: Trevor Sinclair was missed so much last season, and he is going to be brilliant when he is fit.

"Everyone knows about Joe and Michael, hopefully Steve Lomas will regain his fitness and get back again, and there's also Johnny Moncur.

"But the news of West Ham being interested in a player like Guardiola is brilliant.

"I've seen quite a bit of him having been all round Europe with Capital Radio doing the commentaries and if he does come it would be a real coup.

"Towards the back end of last season some poor signings were made and I think Glenn is really looking to sign some quality now."

Although it is thought the Barcelona midfielder would prefer to play for a side competing in Europe next season, Tony reckons the lure of London could do the trick.

."I think Spurs have been in for him, and he wants to come to London, so between West Ham and Spurs - where would YOU go?

"It all depends on the player, and if he wants to play in England and London in particular, with Chelsea and Arsenal having spent big it doesn't really leave him with a lot of options.

"It's West Ham, Spurs, Charlton, and Fulham perhaps but I think West Ham are the pick of that lot."

Indeed Tony is convinced that the Hammers are still a more attractive proposition than Fulham when it comes to enticing players - despite their seemingly unlimited spending power.

"Fulham will spend big but I think they still have a little bit to prove.

"West Ham are established in the top flight and with Fulham it is all new to them, though everyone knows what a great coach Jean Tigana is; but I think the established name of West Ham in the Premiership will sway players their way - providing the wages are right, of course."

By the same token, he does not think Fredi Kanoute will be heading to west London either - despite the rumours.

"I don't think there is any chance: Fredi must be kept.

"We are talking about a quality player, and a young one as well so I don't think Glenn would be in a rush to let him go."
