'It's a marathon, not a sprint,' says Aldridge, 'and we're not going to sign the first footballer who comes along.
'Glenn and I have been away on holiday recently - and I know some people say we shouldn't be going away - but we're both back now and working hard behind the scenes to move things forward.
'We're being very dilligent in our quest for new players and if it takes a few more days or even weeks to get the right men in, then so be it. It's not a race. The important thing is that we get it right.'
The Hammers' MD appreciates that in the absence of any major new signings - Sebastien Schemmel's return was confirmed on Tuesday as Roeder landed the Frenchman for a bargain £465,000 - that newspapers will resort to speculation, which in itself sparks debate among supporters eager for news of new signings.
But the message from Aldridge is clear: don't believe all you read!
He continued: 'We can't stop the papers speculating - they have papers to sell and that's fair enough - but I've only skimmed the sports pages and in the last week alone I've seen us linked with three players who I can quite categorically state we have absolutely no interest in.
'The trouble is, once it appears in one paper, it spreads to unofficial websites and then some fans are questioning our judgement for supposedly trying to sign players who, as I say, we've got no interest in at all.
'When we've got a new signing to announce, the fans know that they will read it here first on this website.'
