Kanoute's Aim

Fredi Kanoute believes that the Hammers can qualify for Europe this season.

"We need to get in the top six," he says, "and I think it is possible because, to be fair, we have a good team.

"But I have said many times we have to be more consistent and come back when we lose."

Fredi returns from a hamstring lay off on Saturday hoping to outshine French compatriot Thierry Henry, one of the men blocking his path to the French national side.

"Admire is not the word but I like his game and how he plays," says Fredi of Thierry.

"At the moment he is one of the best French strikers.

"There is a lot of competition but I'm still waiting. I know there are a lot of strikers though everything is possible.

"But the only thing I'm thinking about is West Ham and playing as well as I can."

Fredi will not directly copy the style which has seen Henry become the Premiership's leading goalscorer, and he says: "Everyone learns from anyone, not especially him, because we all have our own game."

Last weekend was the first time West Ham had won this season without Fredi in the team - was he aware of this statistic?

"I was but I was very happy when I knew the result at Old Trafford,," he smiles.

Now he has got eyes on back to back victories on the road and he adds, looking to the next but one game: "We have to start winning away; every time we go to Leicester or they come to us it is a very hard game.

"Even though they are in a very bad situation it is part of a very hard month for us."

Fredi hopes to return with a goal against Arsenal and he adds: "It is always difficult because a striker is a special position - we only have to get some confidence to score the first and after that things are coming - but it is hard sometimes."

Fredi is not the only player back in the squad - Hayden Foxe and Paul Kitson return after illness and injury respectively.

John Moncur, who had hoped to return for this game after missing Old Trafford through injury and suspension, is still not back, and reports that Steve Lomas is close to returning are erroneous.

Squad: James, Hislop, Andersson, Repka, Dailly, Winterburn, Schemmel, Foxe, Potts, Minto, Sinclair, Kanoute, Di Canio, Defoe, Carrick, Cole, Hutchison, Courtois, Kitson, Garcia.
