After outplaying Sunderland and Aston Villa in previous games yet only coming away with a single point, Glenn Roeder's men secured a deserved victory against Manchester United to boost their confidence further prior to the London derby against Arsenal at Upton Park this coming Saturday.
Says Paul: "You work hard in football and sometimes don't get your rewards but the lads played fantastically well at Old Trafford and got what they deserved at last.
"In the first half I thought we were excellent, retaining possession very well. In the second half we soaked up a lot of pressure and scored a marvellous goal on the counter-attack. It was a great win."
Hammers boss Roeder had cursed his team's luck in recent weeks, but there was certainly nothing lucky about the way they saw off the current Premiership champions on their own patch, as Paul agrees.
"No, there was nothing lucky about that. David James had to make some great saves and be on his guard, but we more than matched them in all areas of the field and it was a great all-round performance."
That performance was topped off by the 64th minute winning goal from 19-year-old striker Jermain Defoe, and Paul admits to being one of the youngster's biggest fans.
"Since his early appearances at the start of the season when he got flashes of the Premiership, Jermain has learnt so quickly and this last week he has been excellent.
"I've got nothing but admiration for Jermain and if he continues to work hard at his game, he will have a very bright future."
While the memories of another famous victory at Old Trafford may live on, though, it's back to reality this coming weekend as the Hammers prepare to face another side with title aspirations.
"It's only Arsenal this week! Seriously, though, you savour matches against the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal. As Glenn said to the players at Old Trafford, this is what we are in it for, to play against the very best.
"It will be another great occasion against Arsenal and we'll be working hard and looking forward to it all week"
