Areola stop nominated for Premier League Save of the Month award

Alphonse Areola’s stunning save to deny Leandro Trossard in West Ham United’s defeat at home to Arsenal has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s Castrol Save of the Month award for February.

The Frenchman’s performance at London Stadium was one of few positives to emerge from a disappointing afternoon against the Gunners, and he duly prevented the deadlock being broken in the 23rd minute by acrobatically denying the visitors’ No19.

Belgium international Trossard latched onto a Gabriel Martinelli cross from the right perfectly, hitting a first-time volley with his right foot towards the centre of the goal only for Areola to react instinctively and tip the ball over the bar.

The winner of October’s Save of the Month award, Areola has been central to much of West Ham’s success this season, and he is indeed joint-fourth in the league standings for saves in 2023/24 (94).

The five other saves in the running were made by Manchester United’s André Onana against the Irons, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ José Sá, Guglielmo Vicario of Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez and Brentford’s Mark Flekken.

Polling closes at 12noon GMT on Monday 4 March, with the winner being announced at 2pm GMT on Friday 8 March.
