AFC Bournemouth v West Ham United
Premier League Summer Series, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia, United States, Sunday 3 August 2025, 2pm EDT (7pm BST)

West Ham United return to match action for their third and final Premier League Summer Series clash against AFC Bournemouth at the iconic Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Sunday afternoon.

The Hammers have enjoyed a productive visit to the USA so far, balancing a range of fan and community activations with invaluable team bonding, progressive training sessions and crucial minutes against competitive teams out on the pitch.

Two outings in the competition so far have yielded a narrow defeat to Manchester United at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and a 2-1 victory over Everton at Soldier Field in Chicago, leaving Graham Potter's side level on points and goal difference with Bournemouth in second, and three points off the table-topping Red Devils.

With hopes of lifting the trophy still alive, next up is an enticing clash against the Cherries, who saw off Everton 3-0 in their first game before falling 4-1 to Manchester United on Wednesday night.

How The Premier League Summer Series Works...

The format of the competition follows the usual domestic points structure, with three on offer for a win and one for a draw.

Each club - West Ham United, Manchester United, Everton and AFC Bournemouth - play each other once. As it stands, Manchester United sit top of the table after defeating West Ham 2-1 and Bournemouth 4-1. The Hammers are level on points and goal difference with the Cherries - who beat Everton 3-0 in their first game - in second, while the Toffees are bottom after two losses from two.

The club with the highest number of points after three games will win the Premier League Summer Series and, if teams are level, then goal difference will be the first metric to decide the victor.

If that is the same, it comes down to the most goals scored.

If the sides still cannot be separated, the head-to-head performance will come into play.

There are no extra-time or penalty shootouts in these fixtures, and there is no VAR.

Team News…

Edson Álvarez could make his first appearance for West Ham United this pre-season, after enjoying a well-earned extended break following his CONCACAF Gold Cup success with Mexico, and joining up with the squad in New Jersey on Sunday.

Summer signings Kyle Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf will be looking for more minutes in Claret and Blue, as will the many Academy of Football graduates in the squad who have caught the eye, including Callum Marshall, Freddie Potts and Preston Fearon.

Bournemouth have made two senior signings so far this summer, with defender Adrien Truffert arriving from Rennes in June, and goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović from Chelsea earlier this month.

Opposition…

Bournemouth raised a few eyebrows when they replaced former West Ham United midfielder Gary O’Neil as head coach with former Athletic Club and Spain international right-back Andoni Iraola back in June 2023.

Iraola had impressed in leading Rayo Vallecano to La Liga and the Copa del Rey semi-finals, but this was his first job in English football, so when the Dorset side failed to win any of their first nine Premier League matches in 2023/24, that decision looked like a gamble that had gone wrong.

The 43-year-old kept his calm, though, and with his team playing exciting, enterprising football, Bournemouth won seven of the next nine to rise to the comfort of mid-table by the season’s halfway point.

A seven-match winless run followed, but another surge of seven wins in eleven games in March and April saw Iraola’s entertaining side rise into the top half. Three closing defeats saw them finish 12th.

Runs to the fifth rounds of both domestic cup competitions were further cause for optimism and that positive feeling continued to grow throughout an eye-catching 2024/25 campaign that saw Iraola’s side put together an outstanding eleven-match unbeaten run between late November and late January, and flirt with European qualification throughout.

In the end, a run of one win in eight between February and April put an end to their hopes of breaking into the top seven, but a ninth-place finish, and victories over the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, represented another campaign of progress that has provided plenty more hope ahead of 2025/26.

Without being patronising, Cherries supporters must be absolutely loving their team’s recent endeavours, especially when you consider their club was in the fourth tier as recently as 2010. Now, the next aim for those supporters, Iraola, his players and the club’s ambitious American owners will be securing that historic first-ever spot on the continent.

Previous Meetings…

West Ham United and AFC Bournemouth have met 16 times in the Premier League since the latter's first season in the competition in 2015/16.

Each of the last four top-flight matches between the sides have finished with the spoils shared, with a 1-1 draw on the south coast being followed by a 2-2 scoreline at London Stadium in 2024/25.

The Irons' record against Bournemouth has indeed been strong over recent years, with the east Londoners boasting a nine-game unbeaten run against the Cherries in all competitions, since January 2019.

Prior to the Premier League, the Irons overcame then third-tier Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic in the pair’s first meeting, in the FA Cup fifth round back in February 1929.

The two clubs met in the old Second Division in 1989/90, when Harry Redknapp was Bournemouth manager, and the Londoners secured League Cup second and third-round successes over the Dorset club in August 2024 and October 1999, respectively.
