Academy Internationals | Jonyla scores winner for Lithuania U17s

West Ham United Academy defender Tomas Jonyla scored his second international goal as Lithuania U17s defeated England 1-0 on Friday afternoon.

Jonyla bagged the game’s only goal in the 17th minute of their UEFA European U17 Championship Round 1 qualifying campaign staged at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld, Scotland, to keep his country’s 2026 U17 Euro qualification hopes alive on his seventh cap for the young Trispalvės.

Group 3 hosts Scotland, who face Sweden in Friday’s other fixture, are next up for Lithuania at Airdrieonians’ Excelsior Stadium on Monday, with the latter knowing a victory could see them progress to Round 2.

Lithuania are seeking to qualify for the final tournament the first time in their history.

Earlier in the day, midfielder Joel Kerr played the full 90 minutes in Northern Ireland U17s' 0-0 draw against Cyprus, a result that is enough to keep them top of the Group 11 table ahead of the final match round.

Despite dominating in terms of possession and chances created, Andrew Waterworth’s side could not break down a resolute Cyprus rearguard and then survived a late scare, with AEK Larnaca’s David Gerasimou missing a penalty after 88 minutes at Ethnikos Achnas stadium.

Kerr, who was Northern Ireland’s match-winner in the 2-1 victory over Armenia on Tuesday, earned his 12th cap for the Green and White Army, and will hope to make it 13 when they complete Round 1 by taking on Finland on Monday 3 November.

A victory in Sotira will guarantee progression through to Round 2, where they would be drawn into seven groups of four, the seven winners of which will join hosts Estonia at the eight-nation final tournament in May-June 2026.
