West Ham United’s U18s new league campaign opened with defeat as the Irons fell to a 3-1 loss at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Confusion and bad fortune for the back-line allowed the home side to storm into an early lead with Brighton two goals ahead within 15 minutes.

Korrey Henry gave West Ham hope early in the second period with a headed finish, having hit the woodwork just before the break.

Josh Cullen and Reece Burke both made their Bolton Wanderers debuts at the end of the week which saw them move on loan to the Macron Stadium.

The Trotters took on Leeds United in their Championship opener on Sunday, but were beaten 3-2 in an entertaining clash in the north west.

The Hammers took on City in The Super Match, the first-ever fixture played between two Premier League clubs in Iceland, but it was the men in sky blue who lived up to the game’s name by completing a 3-0 victory.

On-loan Premier League striker Yuning Zhang scored the vital goal as Werder Bremen again edged West Ham United to lift the Betway Cup.

Zhang, who has joined the Bundesliga club from West Bromwich Albion, struck the vital goal with just nine minutes remaining to secure Werder a 3-2 aggregate win in the German town of Lohne.
