On This Day: Boys of '86 Cottee and McAvennie shoot down Spurs

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Basset & Gold...

West Ham United climbed to fifth in the First Division table with a 2-1 victory over local rivals Tottenham Hotspur on this day in 1986.

Strike partners Tony Cottee and Frank McAvennie were both on target - again - as John Lyall's side delighted the vast majority of the 27,568 fans inside the Boleyn Ground.

Cottee opened the scoring on 17 minutes, racing onto Alan Dickens' through ball and finishing past Ray Clemence.

Ossie Ardiles equalised five minutes later, but West Ham would not be denied as McAvennie slammed home the winner after Clemence had saved Cottee's initial effort.

The Irons went on to finish a record-high third in the table, narrowly missing out on winning the title for the first time in the Club's history.
