Manchester United 1-0 West Ham United
Premier League, Old Trafford, Sunday 30 October 2022, 4.15pm GMT

West Ham United fell to a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford headed home a Christian Eriksen cross seven minutes before the break to put the hosts ahead, before the Hammer launched a second-half onslaught that only came up short due to the heroics of home goalkeeper David de Gea.

Michail Antonio and Kurt Zouma saw their efforts spectacularly saved by the Spaniard in the closing stages, before De Gea made an even better save in added-time, springing to his left to stop Declan Rice from snatching a point with a fingertip intervention.

In between, Jarrod Bowen also had a chance to grab an equaliser, only to see his first-time shot from Pablo Fornals' cross blocked by his former Hull City and current England teammate Harry Maguire.

And so it was that, as at Chelsea and Liverpool, West Ham gave everything but came away with nothing from an away game at one of the Premier League's so-called 'big six'.

An even first half between the two sides saw Manchester United edge in front shortly before the break.

Up until that moment, neither side could convert the opportunities that came at both ends of Old Trafford. There was a half-chance for Saïd Benrahma, whose shot was blocked, while Rashford scuffed his own wide. Tomáš Souček then made an incredible challenge to deny Rashford, before Łukasz Fabiański made two solid saves to hold efforts from the England forward and Cristiano Ronaldo.

A mazy run from Thilo Kehrer posed the next threat as West Ham attacked the Stretford End. The Germany defender found Bowen, who saw his effort saved by De Gea, albeit he was then flagged offside.

Manchester United would ultimately take the lead in the 38th minute. From a throw-in, Eriksen combined with Casemiro and whipped the ball to the back post, where Rashford got the tun to leap above Kehrer and powerfully headed home from close range.

Benrahma

Fabiański was replaced at half-time by Alphonse Areola after the former Poland goalkeeper suffered an injury. The Frenchman was almost called into action quickly, but Rashford’s strike sailed past the post, as did Ronaldo’s header and left-foot shot.

Moyes introduced Michail Antonio to push for an equaliser. The No9 was denied by a tackle from Lisandro Martínez after Benrahma had tested De Gea from distance and Dawson, who had stayed forward following a set piece, curled his strike high and wide.

Antonio then did brilliantly to outmuscle Scott McTominay but his fierce strike from distance was well saved by a sprawling De Gea. As the pressure mounted, the Manchester United goalkeeper then flung to his left to stop a Zouma flicked header finding the top corner.

On the counter-attack, Fred hit the post with a header, but it was West Ham who dominated the final 20 minutes otherwise. When Fornals burst down the right-hand side past Bruno Fernandes, he found Bowen, but Maguire blocked with his calf.

Finally, after the last in numerous attacking dribbles from Saïd Benrahma, Rice almost netted a sublime equaliser, but De Gea was at full-stretch to stop the captain's curling 25-yarder from finding the net.

A frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford in the end, as it was only the Spain goalkeeper's heroics that ultimately secured Manchester United a single-goal win.
