Souček | Back-to-back wins was what we really needed

It was a welcome case of déjà vu for West Ham United and Tomáš Souček as for the second week in succession our big Czech came off the bench to settle a match in our favour on Saturday.

Just as against Newcastle United six days previously, when he notched the game-clinching third in our 3-1 win, he was again the man on the spot to make the difference against Burnley.

With the game finely poised at 1-1 after Zian Flemming and Callum Wilson traded first-half goals, Souček came up with a goal, and also played his part in another, to take the contest away from the Clarets.

First, he was perfectly positioned to chest home after Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka parried Lucas Paquetá's cross-shot, then, with three minutes left, he forced Dúbravka into another parry, which Kyle Walker-Peters gobbled up.

Josh Cullen may have pulled one back for the visitors in the dying stages, but that would not take away from another vital victory for the Irons.

"I'm happy that I could make the impact today because this game was so important for us," Souček explained. "We needed that three points, especially as it was the second time in a row to win at home. It's what we really needed.

"Now we can go to the internationals with a great mood and looking forward to come back."

Maybe I can make 100 sacrifice runs and I don't get the ball, but then on 101 I can score. I believe until the end, all the time, and I got the rewards today

While making an impact from the bench may be an unfamiliar role for the Czechia captain, he is always happy to do his bit for the team.

Making sure that contribution was two goals in two substitute appearances - which take him above Trevor Sinclair and into sixth in the all-time list of Premier League goals for the Club with 38 - means he can be very satisfied that misson was accomplished.

"Obviously, all my career, I was a starter, and that's my dream to be a starter, but things can change and I do whatever is needed," he continued.

"And I'm so happy that I could make an impact on Saturday, impact the last game from the bench and the fans can be proud of me. That's the most important thing.

"For the goals from close in, some people can say that it's only luck, but I say that it is that I believe that's [where] every ball can go.

"Maybe I can make 100 sacrifice runs and I don't get the ball, but then on 101 I can score. I believe until the end, all the time, and yeah, I got the rewards today.

"Then for the third goal [me shooting from outside the box], we don't see too many of them! But in the end it got us the winner. Obviously, Martin Dúbravka made a good save, but it was a great run from Jarrod and Kyle, they want to kill for that goal.

"In the end, it was a winning goal. So that's a really good job from them."

Tomáš Souček scores against Burnley
Souček came off the bench to score a vital goal for the second week in succession

Premier League goal number 38 brought up another milestone for Souček, drawing him level with former Liverpool forward Patrik Berger as the Czech player with the most goals in England's top-tier competition.

That served as another reason for the No28 to depart for a vital FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar next week in high spirits.

"Thirty-eight goals is a big achievement," he added. "I'm proud of that because Patrik Berger, he was an unbelievable striker or like a midfielder, but his goals, he was one of the best Czech players in history.

"Now I'm level with him, so yeah, that's a big achievement for me.

"But like I said, this is a really good individual [accolade], but the most important thing is still West Ham and we need to go higher on the table."
