Moyes: Positives from Europe, momentum and AFC Bournemouth

David Moyes and his West Ham United team have little time to bask in the glory of Thursday night's scintillating UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final victory over KAA Gent, with a Premier League trip to AFC Bournemouth following hot on its heels.

The Hammers head to the Dorset coast on Sunday afternoon in search of a vital three points - an outcome which would lift them above their hosts and closer to the relative comfort of mid-table.

Four goals, including two from Michail Antonio and a stunner from Declan Rice - not to forget Paquetá's ice-cool penalty, had London Stadium bouncing on Thursday and now Moyes says the task is to continue building momentum.

Here is what the manager had to say in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of the Irons' clash with Gary O'Neil's Cherries...

I think everybody is okay [in terms of fitness].

We’re just recovering the players from last night, so the medical team will feed back later in the day and let me know if everybody is okay, but hopefully we’re all fine.

I might make some changes but we have to see what we’ve got. We’ve got some fresh players who could come in, so we’ll see what we’re going to do.

It’s always nice when you reach the semi-final of any cup competition.

It was really enjoyable seeing the boys playing well and scoring goals. Hopefully we take a lot of positives from it, a lot of confidence as well. We can park it (European football) for a few weeks just now and obviously our focus is solely on another big run of Premier League fixtures.

Declan Rice and David Moyes

When you’re 23 or 24 like Dec is, he’s learning with every experience.

So every trip he has [with England], you should be hoping you comes back feeling better about yourself, working and playing with excellent players, so I do believe that when he’s playing for England he’s always an improved player.

He’s had a great few seasons with England and has been one of their standout players, so we’re glad to have him playing as well as he is for us. Hopefully that continues.

As a manager, you go into every game feeling a level of pressure.

Whether you are top of the league needing to win, when that win keeps you up at the top, or whether it’s points to keep you out of the bottom, every manager has a level of pressure.

Obviously there are one or two teams around the middle band, where trying to get a higher league position is important, and there will be teams trying to get into Europe.

We’ve got a good team, I just think we haven’t performed as well as we could have done at different times.

Since coming back from the World Cup, our levels have been much better. We’re beginning to score a few more goals which we hadn’t done before, so we need to keep that up.

Gary O'Neil of AFC Bournemouth

I think Gary O’Neil has done a brilliant job for Bournemouth, he really has.

Most people might have seen Bournemouth as one of the teams who could get relegated, but I’ve got to say I see the opposite.

I see a really good team that Bournemouth have got, I think they are just about safe if you ask me, and I think he’s done a really good job.

We’re in a group that’s still fighting to get the points.

The reason I give Bournemouth that title [of about safe] is that if you look at their run-in, they’ve got a lot of games that I can see them picking up some points in, which at this stage of the season is important.

To win four out of six and to win at Tottenham last week – I wouldn’t say it was unexpected, but you’d have probably seen Tottenham as favourites going into the game, so I have to give them a lot of credit for how they’re doing.

Whether you’re fighting for titles, or trying to stay out of the bottom end of the league, at this point in the season you have to find a way of picking up some momentum.

I think Bournemouth have done it, and they’ve done it in a bit of style because it’s not just as if they’ve beaten lower teams, they’ve had a win against Liverpool, they’ve beaten Tottenham and they ran Arsenal really, really close, They’re showing good signs.
