Chicharito thanks Hammers for #YoXMexico support

Chicharito has thanked West Ham United fans for making a sizeable donation to the #YoXMexico appeal set up following the devastating Mexican earthquake in September last year.

The devastating 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck killed nearly 400 people, injured more than 6,000 and saw more than 40 buildings collapse.

The Hammers striker and his friend and national team colleague Miguel Layun set up #YoXMexico to raise funds for victims of the disaster, with the aim of raising US$500,000 (£360,000).

Chicharito and Porto’s Layun launched the #YoXMexico initiative to aid their compatriots by raising funds that will help deliver food and supplies to those most affected by the disaster, via Red Cross and Los Topos, an organisation specialising in cleaning debris.

West Ham got behind the appeal by auctioning match-worn shirts from the Club’s Premier League fixture with Tottenham Hotspur a London Stadium, with all proceeds going to the victims’ families and survivors.

“I want to say thank you to all the fans for your support and your generosity in this case, and to the Club for matching the amount raised,” said Chicharito, who has been capped 99 times by Mexico and will lead the line for his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup finals.

“It means a lot to me, to my fellow countrymen and to Mexicans all around the world, so thank you very much.”
