Stunning Asseyi strike wins WSL Goal of the Month award

Viviane Asseyi’s stunning, long-range strike against Crystal Palace has been voted the Barclays Women’s Super League April Goal of the Month.

The West Ham United women’s team forward, with her side 4-0 to the good at the VBS Community Stadium, carried the ball from inside her own half to 30 yards out from the Palace goal and unleashed a brilliant lob over goalkeeper Shae Yanez.

That was the France international’s eleventh goal in all competitions this term, as she continued her best-scoring campaign in Claret and Blue.

"I’m really proud to have won this award," said Asseyi, who was also voted the Club's women's team Hammer of the Year.

"Everyone was asking about my reaction straight after the goal as I didn’t celebrate, but I think it was more frustration at myself as I feel like I could have scored more earlier in the game!

"But I realised straight afterwards that it was a really good goal, probably the best I have scored in a West Ham shirt, so I was really happy.

"This season has been a memorable one for me personally, but I feel as if I have some unfinished business here. I want to keep working hard and pushing this Club forwards, and if I manage to score a few more goals like this one while doing so, I will be delighted!”

Fellow Hammer Shekiera Martinez was also up for the accolade, for her second of four goals against Crystal Palace, but was pipped to the award by Asseyi.

The 31-year-old also beat Aston Villa’s Kirsty Hanson, Chelsea’s Catarina Macario, Everton’s Katja Snoeijs and Manchester City’s Jess Park.

Everyone at West Ham United would like to congratulate Vivi for winning the WSL Goal of the Month award.
